I really thought Kahu would be a potential main ML, like a plot twist, since the 13th prince became obsessive, he could easily be the new antagonist or something haha, and our MC could have a battle to the death with the 13th prince, to bad the plot became that way(〜￣△￣)〜
i was hoping kahu was like a great potential male lead in the novel and i was super disappointed when he wasn't. i just dropped the novel because of the same reason as yours. the characters for me were very uninteresting as i read the novel.

basically in the present time line, kahu remembers glimpses of their past lives and felt that everything that is happening around him is dejavu so that's why he asked liz if she's alive since in the past liz suddenly disappeared without a trace and kahu searched for about two years for her. this can open a possible bigger plot but the author just kind of disregarded kahu's route cuz his appearance in the novel ended quickly and him being confused why the only change in the 'dejavu' is liz and that's it for him haha so kind of disappointed for my boy since I rooted for him. I stopped reading the novel at the timeskip where the 13th prince was crowned as the crown prince since he only listens to liz like a dog and he's kind of became a boring character to me.
