lol it's okay. if you don't know someone's gender you should use "they" as it's gender neutral. it works even if someone is a girl or a boy
example: "I don't know THEIR name" // or with what you said: "like THEY did that"
In my case, I always prefer to go by "they" rather than him or her since I dont see myself as a boy or a girl~
