couples don't always know everything about each other but I would think if they were together for a long time they would.

No one can know everything about a person besides themselves unless humans learn to fuse. I will say though that one of the privileges of being in a romantic relationship is being able to know more about your partner than anyone else including their darkest secrets. In that way you can get as close as human beings can to fusing and become one with each other. If you're not ready for that experience it may be better to just stay good friends so no one gets hurt.
