Brief summary, not including details just very very basic:
“Michel” and his brother grew up in the circus. Really loved and admired each other. “Michel” our protag. and he were trapeze artists. His brother was preferred over him bc he was beautiful (like an angel, as michel says) The brother dies in an accident of the trapeze, but michel feels like he’s the one who died instead and his brother ascended to heavens (like the archangel michel/Mikhail)
Michel can’t perform trapeze anymore. He becomes a clown instead. He says he doesn’t have a name. He’s bullied and joked on. He’s called Bird’s nest, bc of his hair. A rich man offers to marry him but he’s just used to please the man’s fetish (light skin that is injured, hurting him) The man also gives him a new name. he has a wife, Coco, whose also mentally ill and Coco has a brother, Michel.
He’s haunted by his brother’s dead, who shadows him in a hallucination.
fast forward, Bird’s nest leaves the man, starts working in a restaurant and is dating michel. He leaves the circus but still longs for it. He goes to this new circus which was operated by the original ring master. Ring master pep talks him. He’s finally free from his brother’s shadow.
Coco slits her wrist bc of her husband’s adultery, Michel angry for both coco and bird’s nest stabs him and turns himself to paris police. he and bird’s nest break up.
Bird’s nest starts trapezing again. He dates the ring master’s wife after the master passes away.
