As somebody who does therapeutic massage often for my work, I’ve gotta say that what he was doing to her arm is a range of motion exercise. It is for people who have impaired use of their arm (ex: can’t reach above your head) due to something like a shoulder injury, arthritis, muscle weakness, surgery recovery, contractures from lack of use, or neural problems.
Usually we have a patient complete the motions on their own if they can, and if the can’t (ex: arm completely paraslysed) then we step in to help move the arm gently through the exercise. In general this is NOT a relaxing thing, and often can be somewhat painful, as contractures, nerve stuff, and arthritis are painful. ROM exercise help promote mobility and prevent pain from such things getting worse long term.
the MASAGE part comes in before and after ROM (range of motion) exercise, depending on the condition. And really no massage should be actively preformed on the arm while holding it in the are. Arms get really heavy after a while, you can accidentally push joints in the wrong direction while massaging, and also you can’t use both hands for massaging of one hand is needed to just hold up the arm.
BASICALLY THE MASSAGE EXERCISE OUR WIZZARD DUDE DID WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN COMFORTABLE AT ALL... AND ALSO NOT WHAT YOU WOULD DO FOR SOMEONE WHO HAD JUST REGULAR ACHEY MUSCLES FROM A LONG DAY OF WRITING
As someone going through physical therapy for my shoulder and it's lack of motion, I winced at that arm exercise I am way too familiar with lol. I been in PT since September
