Well she really can’t helped being so wrapped up in the story since she strongly believes that only by making the story progress like the original would she and her 2other children would survive
I think the purpose of the author here is for Mildred to realized that mistake. She can't always be right in everything.

Maybe she is wondering why their mom is acting like that or she is starting to feel jealous which is perfectly normal at that age. Even she is mature and a kind girl from time to time she will feel that.
Seriously, I found myself smdh when Mildred actually pulled Ashley forward so she could present her first. Regardless of the prince, it’s just common sense that you present your oldest first and now it just looks like she’s showing favoritism. It’s getting real ridiculous. I just hope she won’t go as far as to sabotage her oldest’s love story when she realizes that the prince likes her instead.
