Trust but verify

I think VF is a very "actions speak louder than words" kind of story on several levels. There are characters who I find to be manipulative and whose words I think are almost always false or said for the purposes of provoking others (Mikhail, Mitarai, Sakazaki, Sudou and Maya/Ayu), characters who often say the opposite of what they really feel (Asami, Aki and Fei), and characters who are probably speaking what they think is true, at least as far as they know the truth but who may not know much (Tao, Takato and Kou). I think Kuroda often teases or provokes others to see the reaction--I think this is one of the ways he gathers information. As a prosecutor, his words are tools. But I trust that the information he reports to Asami is what Kuroda thinks is so. I think both Asami and Kuroda tease others affectionately in ways that could sound harsh if you took them that way. Most of the time, I can't trust words.

So far, for me, I think the most trustworthy in terms of believing what he says is Kirishima. I think when Kirishima says, "You have an appointment." that is so. I think when Kirishima scolds Aki, that's really what Kirishima thinks. I don't think he tests, exaggerates or manipulates, and I think he knows pretty much of what is going on in most cases.

Which character's words would you trust?

That is interesting question. Asami It would depend on if it was personal or business. In business , all contracts I would have reread with a fine tooth comb. He is in it ti make money for himself, that is often not fair to some one. In his personal life, I believe he would be more direct and would not lie. At least he has never lied to Takaba. What he is, he is. The secrets he keeps from him(his underground bs)well, that's up to the individual to learn how to handle or not. I agree with you about kirishima. Kuroda's teasing would anger me at some point. I would not be able to tell if he meant it or not. You forgot Suoh. lol, you know if he ever grts the chance to speak again, it will be the truth, hahaha. But I don't trust words. I would only believe if the actions followed.

I don't think Asami lies to Aki, just that sometimes Asami's humor goes over Aki's head. Sometimes it's more sarcasm than humor--like when Asami says, "Oh right--you don't have that kind of value." I think Aki takes it literally, whereas Asami meant it with irony.

Kirishima and Suoh seem reliable enough, and I agree on Tao as well. I'd also add Yoh...I know he worked under Feilong as a spy for Asami, but I see it a bit differently, I even think it really shows his loyalty. He fell in love with Feilong, and despite this, he still kept working for Asami and finished his job. That's what I call trustworthy.

Good point. I think Yoh is likely to just not say anything rather than lie, and that Yoh is willing to be personally accountable for what he does.

Asami for Business, Takaba for personal

You know both you and RB have a point about Asami and business. On the one hand, Asami isn't running a charity and you would have to be wary. One the other hand, when he does make a deal I believe he will honor it. It may benefit him more than you if you are not careful, but he'll do what he agreed to the letter.

A lot of people feel that way. I'm an "actions speak louder than words" fan to the point where I feel words kind of cheapen it (and don't seem right for Asami to me)--but even actions are interpreted (that is, I can see personally recusing Aki on multiple occasions and doing things like having a late fireworks display just because Aki likes it as love, and someone else may not). Words like that make me suspicious--especially from a man like Asami. But to each her own. It may be you'll get you wish--lots of fans like to see that and take words at face value.

I feel Aki will calm done some if Asami admits his love

Many people do. As my New Year's resolution, I will try not to kink-shame people who want Asami to say the L- word or who want Asami to give up his work for Aki. I will even try to stop rolling my eyes when people mention "heart". If I can accept adult people who like to wear diapers during sex and people who write mpreg erotica, I can be more welcoming to the traditional romantically inclined. It's not my thing, but I am not going to judge.

Besides, if I had to chose between (1) Asami breaking into tears and crying at the sight of gunmen, and then clinging to Aki and asking Aki for help, or (2) Asami saying the L word like it's the end of a Hallmark movie, I guess the L word would not be the most horrible thing possible. It's also better than having to see either of them have sex with a female. It's okay. I guess. If it makes you happy.
