Well, I think they're aiming for a somewhat historically accurate depiction of Europe though her actually living in his house is already scandalous enough. It used to be that just being left alone together without a chaperone is enough to get a woman ruined. So they're not even being as severe about it as our actual history was.

Yeah that's why it's a bit annoying to me because they never explicitly say the rules and then when you assume them based on historical elements (because of the setting), they do something utterly ridiculous.
