My thoughts exactly! I think people also forget this isn’t that big of an age gap. People even now a days are marrying with age gaps up or maybe even more than 10-20 years apart. Where this story is set is way back in the day, where it was the norm for very young girls ~10ish to be marrying to men who were the age of their own dads. Plus, this entire story is completely fictional so I don’t understand why people are throwing hands

That's normal in any marriage even now. Emel wasn't her dad or brother or any other relative. He wasn't a nanny or a caretaker. He was not responsible for her upbringing. He was just one of several guards she had. There was no "grooming". Estelle was not raised to be his child bride and brainwashed to do whatever he wanted without question along with complete acceptance. People on here are throwing out terms without even knowing the actual meaning.
