Is gender bender a way to write a story about a gay couple but for some reason didn't want it to be gay? Maaaaan ending was weird

Not inherently. Its based on how it's covered and how they deal with the relationship between gender expression and sexuality.

I see how as a concept it can be interpreted as somehow lowkey homophobic, in that it subverts the possibility of having a story about men falling in love. However, I think this interpretation is kind of unfair considering the nature of sexuality is often addressed in such stories.

In this story particularly, gender expression and sexuality are explored. Often times we see that some of the characters come to realizations about either in regards to themselves. For instance, Fian, under the assumption she was a man, came to terms with the possibility he was gay or bi at least. And when he learns she's a girl he doesn't pretend that previous experience didn't happen. I could see it being homophobic perhaps if a story went out of its way to suggest that the reason he fell in love with her was cause somehow his subconscious knew all along she was a girl but they don't do that here. As well, from my experience, (having seen gender bender movies, dramas, and read gender bender stories) that doesn't really happen that much. Most are pretty self aware about the fact that ideas about sexuality and gender expression get challenged in this setup.

As well, if you find you're interested, I've seen A LOT of gender swap movies and tv-shows/dramas. I've seen several bad ones but also some that are just absolutely the bomb and I'm actually going to be starting another one soon. A Korean drama called Sungkyunkwan Scandal. Suffice to say, it's a genre that I'm really intrigued by (especially when done well) and personally connect to given my own experiences with my gender and how I've expressed in my life.
