I think it's because they agreed to be a family so their bond was one like father and son.
And the dog is the little boy, that's why he has the little white "wings".
And/or when he said demons are made from leftover lives, maybe he was the miscarried bebe?? And that's why their connection is so strong.
I also think he's the miscarried baby, but then again, that's a bit messed up since the guy was just in a "one-sided relationship" with an engaged woman...
