I think it’s just because he hasn’t said anything. I’m pretty sure he feels guilty that he wasn’t there and was instead pouting about her decision to leave. So like right now he feels like he doesn’t have the right to try to explain the situation properly. He probably wants be to judged as if was behind the crime with the other people(even though we know it’s really the church) that we’re charged with her murder. But yea, I’m pretty sure that’s the only reason he’s chained up.
