I am convinced.

A modern 5th grader has more lived experience than she did in her previous life at 17 years old. Like just going to school gives folks so much wisdom. You learn about friendship. About who you can and should trust or not. Who you actually enjoy being around vs who you around because you are supposed to be around. You learn about authority. You know what teachers are cool and which teachers don't play around. If you do something that could get you in trouble you will try, and often fail, to wiggle out of it.

What if you have extra curriculars? Now you must learn about time management. Do you have time to do your homework and practice? You also can learn about teamwork. About how good it feels to win vs how bad it feel to loose.

You might have chores around the house. If you are the oldest kid especially. If you have a pet you will have responsibilities also. Your parents will remind you that you wanted the dog so you have to walk it!

And then I think about life as a noble girl as depicted in these stories around 10/11/12 years old. She would have servants to be in charge of, and either she has already developed into a tyrant, or she is a beloved young lady of the house. She would be learning etiquette and history. Maybe even an extracurricular or to. Dancing definitely, but maybe also singing, or a musical instrument. Maybe embroidery, or in progressive stories swordswomanship. She should be going to tea parties and the like in order to socialize. So she'd already know how her families noble ranking effects her. She might already have a fiancé. She might even have started lessons in how to take care of a house as a lady.

At that age as a commoner, she would be involved with her families business most likely. So she would have started working in the home to help her mother manage the house, and outside of the home with the family business. And of course would have friends and enemies like all kids do. She would have relationships with the people in her little town, adults' she trusted and those she didn't. As a commoner that lived in an orphanage she would have realized that at 10 she's getting a little too old to be adopted. And thus would start thinking of what she could do for work as an adult.

As a slave she would be treated terribly, but she would gain talent and maturity from being forced to work. As a beggar in the streets the same thing. Maybe you find a group to create a family like bond with. Or maybe you become extra hardened by learning that you truly must only rely on yourself.

In any other life but the cage that was burned down around her she would have enough lived experience to not be so helpless in this new time line. So she really is doing the best she can right now. Like kudos for at least trying to run away, at least she managed to keep hold of that much self determination!

Well put! I have seen far too many comments saying she needs to be a stronger FL when her previous circumstance clearly did not allow it.
