Why do you hate the idea of him being the ml? I didn't read any spoilers but it's obvious that they both suffered before she got killed. There's so many things that weren't told in the story so far but I think he knew who poisoned the first empress ( the mc's fake father ) but like he didn't have evidence or something. And, i think the duke forced the emperor to make the mc the empress by blackmailing him with something.
