I believe the Omega was just in love with the Beta the whole time but thought he couldn't be with him because the guy isn't an alpha. Betas and Omegas just can't mate so he just kept relying on him each time he was on his heat.
I disliked his attitude but I do not think he was a gold digger. He was just trying to find a solution to his heavy heat problems and live a nice peaceful life.
I felt bad for both of them honestly. Also glad they ended up happy together
