My theory is that the offerings were originally supposed to be like soul mates to the people of the clan. Somewhere the history become garbled and the clan believed they had to "devour" their hearts in the literal sense instead of "holding" or "being offered" their hearts in the metaphorical sense. This transition that Kuuchi seems to be going through will probably bring out his true power created from their mutual love (or something like that). That's what I'm choosing to believe.

Well the manga in Japanese has been finished a long time, and I think you might be on the right track, (I have all the Japanese volumes), but I honestly can't tell because I can't read Japanese yet.

I can read hiragana and furigana - as long as I have a dictionary or romaji translating app LOL - but I have an awesome tutor too. Let me know if you want to learn, I'd love to share what I've been taught!!

I plan on learning, just not yet. I'm graduating nursing school in May, and taking my boards in June, so I have no time to study anything else till after that. I've bought a couple beginner books though, and if I can I'm going to take a class next fall, so I'd love to practice with you later in the year :)

I can't read Japanese at all. I was just going with how I would have liked the story to go. If I'm on the right track, I'll be looking forward to reading the rest of it!
