I still wonder why he gave a sword in the original novel, I don't think is in order to kill herself, seeing that it was his student that went to see her most probably they planned saving her!!!

I read that the reason he was cood to her is because he was worried people would discover she is his weakness and use her against him, but still that was cruel, specially not explaining to her his plans!!!

But why the sword?

To protect herself most likely. They were probably planning on escaping so keeping a weapon would protect herself a little in case something happened.
Also I agree it was cruel, but I don't think he's aware that it is
