Nice icon hehe but also I can kinda see why she's twisting the words. I mean from her perspective it seems more likely for what she's thinking to happen, then the Duke suddenly being fond of her out of nowhere. He was kinda harsh and did kinda ignore her for her entire childhood
I mean, it’s the entire premise of the story. That she’s misunderstanding him and needs to get away from the emperor who she thinks she has to marry. It likely won’t be solved for a very long time.
but that emperor is wicked and cowardly and will not hesitate to use his daughter to threaten the duke he may even have something to do with the death of the duchess because it is obvious that the duke hates that emperor guy so much. if he showed kindness the spies the coward emperor placed everywhere will report and his daughter will sped her life running from danger, getting kidnapped, almost killed, maybe poisoned. i understand fully well he did all that to protect her but he should have at least let her know or give her hints about the situation. in his eyes she is the most precious jewel in the world, if he keeps her close to him and adores her openly his enemies will try to kill her and the emperor would use her life to control him, looking at the emperor that guy would probably have captured her, killed her and lie that she is alive and use that to control the uke. not that this excuses him of balantly ignoring her but he was only doing what he could do and i think he lost his wife to the coward emperor so he felt that the distance was the only way
