I think he gave her the knife so she can protect herself. I think he was going to overthrow the king after he put her in the shadow room. He probably sent Max to protect her in the disguise of "torture" but she didnt know and killed herself.

It's his fault she misunderstood him; he was always neglecting her and whenever she'd approach him, he'd treat her harshly.
Even when the dad forcefully dragged her to the shadow room, he didn't bother explaining anything to her; he just silently left her as she was scared and crying out, "Please don't throw me away like this". The guy is socially dumb af.

I don't think he knows how to show her affection. From what we can tell she was raised by the maids because he was either away at the order of the king or in his study. There is one part of the chapter where he says that she doesn't see him as a monster. So there is that too to consider he probably wanted to be close to her but didn't know how. Its obvious now that all he did was talk about her to the prince. He has very strong tsundere vibes.
