Okay since I'm still hook into this anime/manga I tell u what I know. Ever since Izana became the king he wanted to test if Shirayuki is worthy to be on the side of Zen. So he sent Shirayuki on a conquest so that she could gain recognitions or title to match Zen. Since Shirayuki is a commoner, she can't marry Zen until she have her own title.. So, inorder to gain a title Shirayuki must become a great pharmacist and gain a recognition worthy to earn a honorable title or even a noble status. So Shirayuki starts her adventure.

As for Zen, Izana wanted to test Zen too. Since Izana were already the king Zen have no longer use or purpose so Izana planned something for Zen. If u remember, before Izana became a king their mother live in the north to cope an rest since she had a weak and sickly body. Their mother didn't just go to north to rest but to balance the northern nobles and rule them. After Izana become crowned, the position of the the ruler of the north become vaccant so he wanted for Zen to become the leader of the north but assigning Zen just like that weren't easy. He wanted Zen to earn recognition first before he assigned him there. Since mostly the nobles will go against it and he also didn't want to babysit Zen. So, Zen also do his own conquest on gaining recognition toward the nobles.

This story will be ultra long since there will be a very very long way before Shirayuki gain respect and recognition. I realize that in this story, nobles were more powerful than the royal family so they can't just do whatever they wanted since they been restricted.
