they aren't saying that there is a sequel like that, they're saying that they want there to be one. i read it as though they were saying there was one the first time.

I think a sequel where Shinkai had this sudden growth spurt as a second year, where he is as tall as Maru and looks cooler and manlier would be perfect (๑•ㅂ•)و✧
