Im guessing its because he didnt want show weakness and get her killed because he loved her too much. I also think the knife given to her in the past life was for self defense-

Yeah he def seems more smiley now! Though in the past version with her obsession and behaviour as a villainous it's likely he didn't do that as it seems she didn't pay much attention to him once she became obsessed with that blonde psycho lol
