I believe it is just her imagination as in, she feel guilty because she has to kill the baby philly in order to escape. The thought of killing the baby made her remember of the past of her being hopeless or sthg, we don't know about past yet except the fact that she died in her own room.

I think the imagery is of her as a little girl in a past life, not what she imagines the baby bird would look like at as a human. She just sees herself in it cus it gets abandoned by parents
