It is illegal in this story to release slaves (if I remember correctly) so wouldn't it be better to have a whole bunch of them and take care of them rather than have possibly actually bad people have the slaves? When you have no choice the better choice atleast in my opinion would be to do just that.

Y'all can't look at it like how you look at men like for example, "Oh my gosh, he doesn't treat his girlfriend like an object" when the guy be doin' the bare minimum whereas in here, you can't tell the slaves to be grateful just because they're being given food that's trash and not physically getting abused but still is extorted by slave owners just because they were "captured"
