I feel you. The first webnovel I tried to read was Returner's magic should be special and I'm sorry, I don't know if the translations were just poor or if the original novel was just written not greatly, high focus on just dialogue, short and choppy sentences, it just hurt to read it, so I gave up on trying to read novels of manhwas, but scog's translation was actually readable and I think that the translators over at wuxia world did a great job.
If it was too wattpad-ish I don't think I could have read 500 chapters of it.
For other novel comparisons from my experience, solo leveling was just slightly better than returner's magic, trash of the count's house was average but fairly boring and the second best novel was overgeared, not quite there with scog, but still pretty good.
I know these are quite specific for novels and that there is a chance of you not even knowing them, but it's the best comparison I could make, so yeah there it is.

lol ik the manhwa, just not the novels
would you say that scog has good translation writing? like, it’s descriptive, coherent and doesn’t sound ridiculous?
In a manhwa, i can get when the writing isn’t wonderfully perfect and emotive, since it’s mainly a visual stimuli, but reading is a totally different story. You don’t get pictures or pretty art to look at if the writing or script is shit.
And tbh, scog lost its charm in the second season. I was literally in love with the art and story and shit, but now i’m not so sure.
does the novel maintain the feel of the first season? i’ve heard that the artist tried to make the second season more like the og storyline of the webnovel

Yeah, the writing of the novel is just fine, it has everything that you need for it to be interesting and eyecatching. Worth your attention. But I have to day that season 1 of the manhwa was decent, not really good but just enough to keep you reading. After reading the novel I have realized just how much of a mistake season 1 was. I made a whole rant once before already and to sum it all up, they just skipped important plot, very important characters, all that actual character development.
Whole if scog is a story about how a gambler that didn't care about anything becomes something more. Oh god, the character development in this is so damn great. Just remembering about the development that seol jihu went through to become who he is now at the end of it all just puts a smile on my face.
Yes, the second season is different, but it's not bad different, because even the first season was something bad as it was. The novel contains everything you are in need of to enjoy the experience. To just sit back and keep your thoughts occupied. I legit cried towards the end, like full on tears streaming down my face without stopping and I think that not a lot of stories have the power to do. Especially in this isekai novel genre.
You can just try to give it a read, first 10 chapters are enough to tell if the writing us good enough for your standards and if it is then you can just read it and experience it for yourself, because it's just great.
I know that this is a long message but this conversation with you reminded me how dear scog was to me when I was reading it like 5 months ago. Now I feel very tempted to even reread it, because it's just that great.
Another harem as usual ┑( ̄Д ̄)┍
