Maybe he's speaking about the things she did behind people back to protect the kids like acting as a couple with that dude to dodge her mother protest to remarry things like that. Because again in the first chapter she herself told what she did for the in order to raise them and save their fortune, i guess nora knew about these things that made him love her even more. (Ugh i really want a romance between them )
Does the cardinal actually like the marchioness, is that why there is whip marks on his back to stop the ‘urges’??
