Well he is being bullied that's why he is scared of getting hit that mindset is hard to change
The right call is to just scream your head off. Once you attract attention they'll scatter since they don't wanna get caught.
This might sound insensitive but I scoffed when he said something like what if they hit me. Like ??? does being scared and weak protect you from that? It doesn't so stop being a coward. No one is obligated to protect you so it's really your choice. Train, become stronger, and protect or cry and hope you don't get beat. That mindset just urks me so bad.
