I agree. She had severe post partum depression and he was never there, even when he came back. She doesn't know that he loves her, just thought it was a marriage of convenience. And she wasn't allowed to do anything, because she's just a woman, so she was pushed aside and ignored. It's horrible how she treated her son, of course, but all she needed was some fucking attention and understanding.

This is exactly everything that I was thinking :( especially if she had post-partum depression that severe then the best thing she could have been doing would actually be to do SOMETHING, like having a schedule and duties to perform as the duchess, not just being left to sit in her room in sadness and confusion ㅠㅠ ofc it's obvious in this world they probs dont know about post-partum depression so I'm sure she felt even worse feeling like a shitty mom and not knowing why... ofc harsen never told her he loves her which could have stopped this whole misunderstanding about their marriage from the start ugh...
What makes it worse is that the words of the doctor and the baroness?? seem to indicate there is some kind of psychological knowledge in this world, and everyone still did nothing. It was just all so avoidable.

I hate how the characters are so realistic, it’s somewhat unnerving and it really pushes you to a corner where you can’t say that one of them caused all this fiasco. It gnaws at your morales and I know they’re both at fault, but maybe I dislike the duke a little bit more just because he was making conscious decisions, yes the mc did as well, but she was suffering from depression and had little to no support at all. I might get attacked for double standards on this one but idk abt yall but i didn’t see the support for the mc when she was going through depression. Yeah he went to war and stuff so how tf would he support her right, but he was still the same even when he was with her sooo. Anyway, they both had faults, i just dislike the duke a little more because he was the stable one between them at that time, i wish he would have initiated a proper conversation between them.
