i think the kidnapping scene was a flashback. he was at this place with the girl joanna who brought him apples and and then the reader later gets to know how he got there (the kidnapping) and now we see him again with joanna and her dad who sells the counterfeits.
people are saying ian didn’t leave willingly, but it seems to me that ian did leave raymond willingly, and then was kidnapped from his new place where he went as “nick”
