It was common place in the past for rulers to have multiple lovers to increase the chance of offspring. This was mainly cause children rarely lived past three while also remaining healthy. Its where the “harem” trope comes from. However personally I think that it’s more of an, “I used to be romantically involved with each of these men” type sitch- kinda like if you lived with all you ex’s but they all still loved you.
