I’m not sure if I’m remembering correctly, but I think it was already hinted that the son is actually his brother’s, not his. Since his brother was supposed to be the heir, I’m guessing he had gotten together with someone within their family, although I don’t think they’ve revealed who it is yet.

In the novel the brother feel in love with a woman (who he thinks has nothing to do with their family) but when the brother died its reveal that that woman was their sister (if I'm not wrong), she got pregnant and died at child birth.
When brother and sister get together a boy is born.
When is a woman from another family a girl is born.
So in order to always have a sucessor the head of the family has to have at least 2 wife's (the sister and another one)

damien isn't hugh son, damien is the son of hugh brother the one that died Hugo, that's why they call damien a illegimate child.(づ￣ ³￣)づ

Damien is Hugo's nephew. His brother fell in love with his half sister(they didnt know, more like manipulated to fall in love) and Damian was born. Thats why Hugo hates his blood. Because males in their family can only be born through incest. Unlike females where you would have to be in Lucia's exact situation.
I have a question. For Hugo to have a son that would mean he committed incest because as explained a son can only be born if the mother is of Taran blood. So that would mean that they had a sister or if there was no sister with his mother??
I also have doubts whether its his actual son. I mean he is so adamant in giving the duchery to his 'son' kind of like how his so adamant on living as his brother Hugo that it might be Hugo's son. Also did the 'son' play a role with how his brother killed their parents and himself?
I kind or realized that it might have been a cousin instead of a mother/sister.
