ML keeps having to die to gain new skills, insight into the floors, etc etc but it was shown early on that he kinda loses a little bit himself whenever he does (when he killed himself 4090 times he stopped feeling afraid of death or guilt for killing Flame Hunter). FL doesn’t come until much later (and it’s not the witch lady) but her ability connects the life of her and ML so whenever ML kills himself, she dies too which keeps him sane and helps him learn that killing himself should be the last resort
