It's nothing like that.
If we exclude the extremely demonic variables in the story, the rest are very true about false believers and faith extremists . In fact, they've occurred in the past in a very bold degree. Lots of people died with a claim that it's "a mission from God" or because they think they are some kind of divinity that exorcize what they deem as "evil. It still happens at this time, but not as obvious like in the history.

I was so disgusted when they killed the she wolf and the kids... in the name of religion. It is quite realistic in a ways that show how far people can go for the 'greater good'.
