"You're just some guy that jacked off to my show" = you're the one giving me your money you're not special to me. Remember he actually really admired the author so he's upset that he thinks he's being looked down on. Being judged is annoying and I'd be upset if I felt that way too, doesn't mean he's ashamed.

Agreed, this is what I'm trying to convey, that reaction was rooted from insecurity, he ofc comparing his job to the respected author consciously or not, and felt inferior and judged, eventho the neighbor said nothing to mock him..
