When he was an older teenager his mom found out and stopped the situation, but also told him it was something HE should feel ashamed of and that it was better no one else knew. She asked him to be strong enough to heal on his own, thus ensuring he has deeply rooted trauma that is triggered by people trying to get close to him. He feels unworthy and afraid to be seen and get attached
