I'm pretty sure the Duchess really cared for the Princess and took care of her son because he resembled her. In the original story, she dotes on Luca because he also resembles the late Princess. I think the Duchess is pampering Judith/Eudith soley on her eye color (which resembles the Princess's).
I talk too much, sorry. I don't think the Duchess is a bad character or scared that Luca is gonna take the Duke title (cause they were initially looking for a successor). The Duchess is just pampering Judith cause her eyes resemble the late Princess' s. ╮(￣▽￣)╭

First it’s established that Sophia (the duchess) has an obsession with the Queen (Luca’s grandmother). She maybe gay lol
So I’m pretty sure she doesn’t care much about Luca and if he becomes duke or not. She should be on Luca’s side technically since he’s the closest successor to the Queen. However, the light purple eye color of the Queen is really rare, so that’s why Sophia (duchess) is paying more attention to MC instead.

The way I understand it is the FL thought she really loved Jonas since she took care of him since he was born so she assumed the reason she then loves the son is because he looks like Jonas. So if you really love Jonas the more his son looks like him the happier she’d be. What she realizes with the purple eye comment is she is not so much loving Jonas or his son, but really loved the princess who still now remains number 1 in her heart. In short she is mostly concerned that the princesses legacy continues I.E. her linage and since it is the princess who cares about the most she is wishing Jonas’ son looked more like her than Jonas. So she finds it a little bitter that she doesn’t so much love Jonas or son for who they are, but more who they came from. It’s yet to be shown though whether her love/devotion for the princess is bc she loved her as a person or believes in the importance and sacredness of the royal blood.
