Ah, I was pissed off and annoyed at him at first when I first came across the novel. He is a hypocrite and he knows it.
Spoiler
Later in the story he is still pisses me off but not in like the I hate hate him sense imsorryifidontmakesense
He dislikes/hates the people that has the flaws as him. An unconscious behaviour? I think so. He absolutely hates himself. Like mysto ivel said, he thinks of himself as a reader, and pretty much dissociates with everything that is happening around him.
And with regards to sacrifice, he has only ever sacrificed one person later in the story.
You seem like a nice person so you will be mad about this and hate him for that too. But the person of sacrifice deserves it, at least that is what he feels. And he unknowingly hurt the people around him because of this decision.
OH MY GOD YOU SOUND LIKE SUCH A NICE PERSON THE MORE I THINK ABOUT IT I TOOK AN HOUR TO WRITE THIS AHHHH

Oh the grasshopper scene was absolutely horrible but I wouldn't have known what to do in that situation... There are only 3 grasshoppers left, and if he hadn't killed the other, there is still only 4.
I hate it but I felt like Kdj made the cruel but right, in terms of equality, decision. No one's life is worth more than another's so how could Kdj do other than do that so if they survive, it will be due to you know survival skills, luck is also a skill.
He did say that he was grinning and felt something like an adrenaline rush, but he felt guilty about it. So I guess in a way he is trash but with awareness?

OMG, now I feel bad to make you think that I'm a nice person when I'm actually not. For example, I would prefer the "main protag" method than his method, and main protag method is very cruel. I'm just annoyed by the fact that he is kinda hypocrite and still bring himself to criticize other people. I guess I'm too harsh on my view point. I guess he is better than that psycho who kills people at first, but like "you practice what you preach, right ?". I don't think he is in the position of talking bad about that dude, when in fact, murders in this story also try to survive. What's the difference between his some of his teammates and the psycho anyway.
I guess he views himself as a reader is kinda benefitting him? Since he probably feels less guilty about it.

Spoiler (not major but about his behavior)!!!

Kim Dokja is actually not a bad person (not in my vision at least) and the scene about the grasshopers he keeps thinking about that all the way through the novel, he feels bad about his choice and regrets it even knowing there wasn't a way to save all of them. Obviously he is not a perfect person, he's got flaws and he knows it.
But he's someone you get attached to the more you get to know him!

Tl:dr at the end
While I agree with you, that's part of his character. He fully acknowledges that he is a hypocrite, but its supposed to be realistic, like anyone else in an apocalypse. Not everyone would be super civil and kid or whatever, and they would have to sometimes manipulate others to save themselves. But that's what makes him an interesting mc. At times, he can be cold and heartless, but at other times its surprising to see him genuinely risk himself for his allies, even if all he 'gains' is the trust of a strong ally.
Anyways to:dr is that his hypocrisy is born of his circumstances as a surviver of an apocalypse and makes him an interesting character
I wonder if he got better, 6 chapters in and he is a hypocrite. There are 4 insects in it, he won't let the psyo dude kill the old lady, but he threw 3 insects out and let people fought for it. They would have died as well. What's the difference between him and that psycho. He is even more twisted, cause he makes a scene for himself to enjoy.
