To inseminate the females, i dont know the right terms but the female cats ovaries dont work as humans so they need the spikes to make sure theyre semen its gonna go in at the ovaries and get her pregnant, or somethinng like that...

The barbs actually begin the whole fertilization process so to say. It punctures the female cat irritating it to get the process started. Also, the barbs will most likely keep the female cat from mating with other male cats because a whole litter of cats can be from different fathers.
