Have you tasted nutmeg? You wouldn't unconsciously eat the multiple spoonfuls required to get any toxic side effects...just like you wouldn't be able to eat tons of cinnamon..or the 130 spoonfuls of black pepper, which is toxic too. It being used in fiction like this is quite a stretch...
The reason why I question how the queen could even swallow the food... it would be like putting cups of salt onto a steak, inedible
Nutmeg is interesting however, grown in special locations on remote islands...you should look up the history and facts about the spice if it would make you feel better. It is actually amazing how far people traveled, risking life and limb, for spices and the profits they would bring...
If you should worry about anything with a little one...it should be to make sure to introduce many foods to them while they are young. Especially things like peanuts and other nuts. There are some theories that suggest being introduced to such foods...like in a peanut butter form, may help reduce allergen rate. Genetics also seem to increase likelihood of allergies.
Also good to keep an eye out if certain foods cause diarrhea or other symptoms in your little one...foods like milk or soy have different allergy symptoms than the usual anaphylactic shock.
Just talk to the pediatrician..
If you are really worried...be sure to keep things like mouth wash, chemicals, and tylenol away from the little one. That is a little known fact... it DOES NOT take a lot of tylenol to cause fatal liver damage... Recommend doses of tylenol can be a life safer for your little one. It is hard for us to remember how bad fevers and pain were when we were kids...But taking an overdose of tylenol is pretty dangerous.
Always make sure to keep medication high up, not just relying on childproof bottles, but also putting it out of reach and into hard to access places.
I knew a story of a preteen girl who overdosed on tylenol. She didn't really want to die, but wanted her parents attention.
Sadly they were unable to pump her stomach in time, and unable to find a transplant I heard...
So worry for your kids. BUT irrational fear and over protection will just turn them into sheltered teens, and adults who are unable to handle the real world... Sheltered kids who do not know that others do not have the same motivations and morals as them...They make great targets to predators of all types as adults! From friends who just want to exploit, to coworkers/bosses, to potential partners.
Kids are smart. Protect them, but always explain things to them. If they know WHY something is dangerous, they are less likely to do it. "Do not jump off the swing?" "Why?" "You may hurt yourself..if you hurt yourself, you won't be able to swim all summer! " just saying "because I said so," should only be done in rushed emergencies...It is kinda like saying "don't press the red button." Temptation..
Please do not overly worry..it is hard because we love family, but too much worry can hurt your kids more than you could imagine. The habits and "street smarts," we learn when young follow us through life.
Enjoy the comics! Remember they are fiction!
Watch me now intensely be wary of nutmeg with my little one
