When he tried to stand up for himself, people died. When he tried to defend his wife, her life became endangered. He was a human who can't see what the future holds and made some bad choices. He didn't have much power or political pull and no real means to defend himself anyways. So he did what he thought was best for the time. The ghost of his wife whom he loved and failed to protect haunted him for the rest of his life. That's more torture than any one man deserves.
Now he has a second chance and is doing all he can to protect his wife and child and doing his best to step up and be the man he should have been but was too naive to be.

Only because the situation spiralled down so badly did he acknowledge the problem and regret it. Reina's 'ghost' or memories only haunted him because he regretted not doing shit and leading to the worst situation. He was reluctant to go against her father which made the situation so much more worse. Had he refused to that mf and TALKED to his wife and made his mind up to protect his women that tragedy would not have occured.
