Not supporting the duke here, but if he fired the staff, the problem won't change because the trash father can easily send more people to increase influence and control. Like a snake taking over the ants' nest.

Things he could’ve done instead of self pity:
Fire the staff
Tell her what’s going on
Not yell at her when she thinks you hate her??
Not take her child away
Don’t treat her like shit
