maybe he was being nice? since he said so himself that he can relate to what okezawa was going through. plus, he is chihiro's sister's friend and is well-liked by chihiro's mother, so i guess at the very most, he was being polite and friendly. tho i am a bit irked at the situation. i could feel the jealousy radiating off chihiro. ╮(￣▽￣)╭
Okay but I don't think its nice to mess with peoples feelings.
Like even if he felt bad for him and could relate, giving someone false hope is even worse. Sometimes the kindest thing is to be firm and cut if off as early as possible. He let this guy spend money, cook for him , rearrange his schedule for weeks all the while having no intention of reciprocating those feelings. All the while turning his lovers own home into an uncomfortable and hostile environment.
That's fucked up if you ask me.
