It was something about an old emperor being in love with the saint of that time so he took the power of the real saint and gave it to his lover. The adult saint of the story is the descendant of that lover and Nina is a descendant of the saint whose power was stolen. So every time they are close the stolen powers go back to the original owner that’s Nina. Based on this, if the novel was that the emperor would fall in love with the saint that can save him, he is gonna end up together with Nina. At least, that’s what I think
