Maternal and paternal instincts are just terms used for the parents' attitude towards their child. It's not technically tied in a gender. A male can have maternal instincts so as a female can have paternal instincts. Both genders can do something both parents do so I don't think it's such a big problem that I used "maternal" as a term because I'm not talking about River's gender in the first place. I was pertaining to his attitude towards Heil's child that can be often seen in moms
