Art constantly diminishes Tess as a child and it feels condescending. Art is letting them down as an adult would do to a child, and of course he’s doing what he thinks is right, but we know how old he is but Tess doesn’t, in fact she’s technically older than Art physically. He doesn’t take her feelings seriously because she’s young, but she’s getting older and is starting to notice that he won’t directly address the situation and instead sneaks his way out of it as if she were a confused kid and she had no idea what she was talking about. Tess is old enough to have a crush and romantic feelings and she deserves to have her feelings taken seriously and be rejected properly. That’s the problem, not her not being able to take the rejection.

Well she's still a kid and at best her childhood friend. Art also consider tess feelings but holding it in because of his past life.
