Im sure Riftan didnt know Max was abused. If he knows he will surely avenge Max. Some spoiler that I have read. Riftan falls in love at first sight with Max thats why he offers marriage to the bastard duke just to get married to our Max.
He might not know explicitly she was abused but the signs are there.. her fear of abandonment, stuttering, second guessing herself constantly no way he can’t think something is up with her. His in love and that’s all great but it takes more than love to truly and understand someone and how to deal with them.
In real life even people in love will not realize if theres a trauma in a person. Some other suicide and they didnt know because they are good at masking their emotion. In the case of Max for sure his father and the people around the dukedom hide the fact and cover it up with lies. No matter how smart the person is if its covered up, you will believe the lie. Don't you?

Thank u angel *throw visual kisses. I'm a fan of Max, I dont want to be a spoiler to anyone bcoz I read the novel. But Max personality improves as the story goes and I want to think outside of the box. Most readers here just blame Riftan or said bad things about Max when in fact they dont know anything. If you read the story you must be in the position of the character and not just get mad with the characters.
Its just too sad that some reader always lean to the ML (Riftan is a hero but he is not superman lol). Riftans character is quite realistic, how can Riftan help the FL, if the FL itself doesn't open up. But I will said this, Max will have a big character development and she will open up little by little to Riftan.
His not really an asshole... all things considered. But if you marry a girl who stutters and clearly been mentally abused you should probably try to adjust your attitude. I go from yaoi to straight romance and it’s always the same ole toxic nonsense. I’m close to giving up on manga.
