Always :| and then when they are drawn as side characters they're rarely done much justice. You can't win

Isn't that douchebag of a prince the antagonist? Plus it was quite common for people to eye other's land, plus this also has an incompetent ruler

That doesn't discount the fact they're still antagonists & that this is a running theme. If we're being honest, this story is the least terrible of them. It still has the stereotypical strong dark skin woman and antag but it's not done in a way that INTENTIONALLY discounts the femininity of dark skin women or says dark skin ppl are evil - it just plays into stereotypes unknowingly. So when you consume this media over and over again, you form unconscious bias.

You don't understand how shocked I was as a kid seeing Tiana become a princess on screen, I always thought that sort of thing belonged to the Cinderella's of this world. This shit actually impacts people, and I'm b l a c k as hell.

Like there's no goddamn way there's 0 dark skin ppl in their continent when they've got foreign mfs next door. Immigration is a thing. If you're going to use Arabian influence in your stories, perhaps giving them equal weighting on both sides rather than just for plot purposes is a more respectful idea than just using them as antags lmao

TLDR: this isn't the worst story out there, and I can ignore that the foreign antags HAPPEN to be dark skin. That doesn't mean there isn't a pattern ppl are gonna raise an eyebrow or two at.

also the fact they always make them “exotic” looking ...

I’ve sadly come to expect it seeing as we’ll never get even a brown skinned female lead ever

God yes I'm so tired of dark skinned antagonists, especially when they're seen as "barbaric" "savage" or "war crazed" it's so obviously thinly veiled racism

    Gingitsune May 17, 2021 6:57 pm

Hmm will they really be the antag? Or will they be the allies for Payne and Sasha? It’s hard to say still.

Yeah it’s been kind of irritating seeing so many stories take that route to set the antags apart. ): I’m just going to chalk it up to retaliation to yt people trying to colonize and eastern races defending and conquering over.

Yeeeees. That tired played out racism.

the only time i see dark skin protags are in yaois which kinda says something... like i found this one story and i though omg hey theres finally a dark skin female protag but then i read the spoilers and they said she becomes whiter (due to her powers and shit its total bullshit) and i was like... bruh

it honestly sucks that there is a lack of diversity in mangas, manhwas, and webcomics they are always the bad guys, background characters, or is treated as exotic beings

    Aubrey May 18, 2021 3:14 pm

there are some who are protagonists though ! such as light and shadow it's a really good one, i definitely recommend it ! ლ(´ڡ`ლ)

Omg her skin getting lighter just makes me feel weird. Also I hate to say it but I understand why in mangas, manhwas, and webcomics there aren’t any brownblack leads and that’s because they are usually made by an Asian author or for Asian audiences but in the end either way it’s really sad

I love Korra but her being a bisexual dark skin fem was literally revolutionary so this is only highlighting how rare they are lmao
