when you like someone, you go out of your way to paint them as somebody you want them to be (for tristan, he likes ethan so much that him being a potential vampire didn’t even cross his mind because he loathes vampires). you can notice that with people you used to like (e.g., an ex-lover, a former friend, a public figure that you were a fan of). you think they were so cool when you still liked them but in hindsight, you feel that everything they did/said were cringeworthy, douche-y, or downright irritating. i’ve been there.

i also thought that he’d be skeptical of ethan from the get go. i guess the author wants him to be very surprised once he learns that ethan is a vampire to intensify the drama. i’m getting nervous just by thinking about it. i hope this isn’t a tragedy.
