They probably got it from how Hollywood and stage actors/actresses behave. I'm in theatre and hugs and kisses, on the cheek when you're not performing, are greetings of hello and good bye among people who coperate well together. So the Japanese may have misinterpreted that as EVERYONE in America kisses as a greeting.

Lol, yeah. It's pretty strange that they think that but I never realized that's probablg where it came from until I went back to visit family in Malaysia and someone asked me about it. Their reason was they've seen it on TV.
