He might not be a bad guy by the end of the manga, but in my book his is a bad guy by the way he treats his brother and people.
I am not sure but I think that Arthur is the real king because he was able to pull out the sword. We know that the former king liked Arthur's mother and in order to get her, he imprisoned her husband and for the husband to be free, she had to marry the king. The mother later gave birth to the current king and I think that he was suspicious of the child being his son because the Lady has not been with him for long and stuff like that. Then there was a coup where the duke who was imprisoned overthrew the former king.
I think that during her time with the king, the Lady got pregnant which and the child is Arther. In the king's flashback, we see that Arther is able to pull the sword that determines the next to be king and he has magical power which is something only in the royal bloodline which the current king does not have.
When Arther first pulled out the sword, the duke saw it and that it, and from then he started to be suspicious if Arthur, was truly his son or not.
Now for the current king, he is also suspicious of the fact that he is not really the king and it is actually Arthur because Arthur showed that he has royal blood by pulling out the sword and showing his magic. I think that the king feels as if Arthur is taking what was supposed to be his and stuff like that.
I am not sure if that makes sense but my conclusion is that Arther is the former king's son and the current king is the duke's son. But I could be wrong.

Ok so what actually happened? Why would both the king & daniel are suspicious of their child? Is elizabeth the type that cheat or what?? & why is the king so hateful to arthur? Sure he's jealous of the whole magi thing but it's not like arthur choose to be that way. & is the king a bad guy or is he a good guy? He doesn't really look like a bad guy to me..well at least he's not a tyrant
